How To Care For Your Land During Autumn

Sunday, August 25, 2024

North Carolina Forests include highly diverse forest ecosystems that support a very strong forest industry in the state, producing forest products from medicines to log homes.

The state includes approximately 18.4 million acres of forestland, 61% of the total land area. Approximately 82% of this forestland is owned by private landowners, which supplies timber for a significant portion of the state’s overall industrial output.

The state’s forest industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, providing jobs for thousands of employees and producing timber products shipped worldwide. Over seventy-two thousand workers are employed in the timber and lumber industry in North Carolina.

The forestland also produces many other important natural resources and attributes, including wildlife habitat, watersheds, recreational areas, carbon sequestration, and living spaces. North Carolina is blessed with an abundance of forestland, much of which is owned by private landowners.

Enjoy Your Land During Autumn

If you own forestland, you may manage the forest for its timber production potential through active forest management, such as thinning, crop tree release, or harvesting and reforestation practices. It is important to actively manage the timber to ensure future forest sustainability and health. However, pay attention to the many other attributes a well-managed forest can offer.

Autumn is a unique season, especially in the mountains, when there are many activities that can be enjoyed on your land. During this time, the weather is typically cooler than the summer months. During the summer, you may visit your land and be overwhelmed by the heat and abundance of insects, spiders, mosquitoes, and snakes.

However, in the fall season, the forestland is much cooler, bugs are beginning to disappear, and snakes are seldom seen. You can hike through the forest without the ever-present spider webs that can cover trails during the summer and cover you as well when you walk through one.

If you are actively involved in forest management practices yourself, such as firewood removal, crop tree release, or tree fertilization for increased acorn production, the summer heat can be difficult to overcome. Not so in the fall, when the temperature is cooler.

Because of the weather, activities during the autumn season can be more enjoyable than during the summer heat. Here are a few activities that the autumn season is perfect for.

Autumn Activities To Take Advantage Of On Your Land

  1. Firewood Removal: If you manage your timberland for the production of firewood for personal use, consider during most of your firewood removal in autumn. Because of cooler temperatures and the absence of most insects, especially in late fall, harvesting and removing trees for firewood is easier and safer.
  2. Crop Tree Release and Timber Stand Improvement: Again, because of the cooler temperatures, it is physically easier to work a chainsaw during the cooler weather in the autumn season. Also, as leaves fall, the overstory will open up, making it easier to select the crop trees to release.
  3. Trail Construction and Hiking: Autumn is a perfect time to construct and utilize hiking trails on your property. There is nothing better than walking a frosted trail on a brisk autumn morning, especially in the mountains during full leaf color.
  4. Camping: Again, because of cooler temperatures, camping on your property in autumn can be more enjoyable than during the heat of summer or the extreme cold of winter.  You do not have to worry about ticks or mosquitoes during the autumn months. But be careful with your campfire because of the fall fire season during dryer times.
  5. Hunting: Many of the game animals that are legal to hunt in North Carolina have their legal hunting season in the fall. For most of the state, deer season runs through the season. If you are a hunter, then autumn is the perfect time to do so. You can combine hunting with a camping trip to really take advantage of what your forest provides for you during this season.
  6. Leaf Watching: If you own forestland in the mountains or Piedmont region with an abundance of hardwood, autumn is the perfect time to visit your woodlands and take the time to see the changing colors that autumn provides. With all of the activities listed, take time to enjoy the changing season and the changing colors.

Well-managed forestland not only provides timber that generates income for your land but also provides many other benefits. Autumn is a perfect time to take advantage of your property and enjoy the forest's natural beauty. In order to continue enjoying the forest's many attributes, periodic income is also important to offset the costs of owning land so you can continue to enjoy your land.
