Select Hardwoods - Yard Manager Overview

Select Hardwoods is a concentration yard with 6 kilns processing up to 12 million feet of hardwood lumber per year. Select Hardwoods is the dry kiln division of Church & Church Lumber Company. We are looking for a yard manager to join our growing team.   We provide a very competitive salary and benefit package including paid vacation, SIMPLE IRA match and health insurance. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee lumber inspectors grading & line management.
  • Coordinate with inspectors to manage the lumber packers and machine operators.  
  • Use NHLA reports, customer feedback and Dry Kiln Manager suggestions to target areas of improvement.
  • Conduct after-hours quality control training with inspectors on a scheduled basis.
  • Oversee line crew to ensure all lumber is graded, tallied, tagged and inventoried properly.
  • Assist Dry Kiln Manager with Quality Control protocols.
  • Report on sawmill and kiln defects.
  • Asses current QC procedures and coordinate with Dry Kiln Manager to make revisions where needed.
  • Implement and train appropriate personnel to follow QC protocol to assure the best quality product is shipped.
  • Assist Dry Kiln Manager in maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
  • Oversee all lock/tag out procedures are followed properly.
  • Assist Dry Kiln Manager with dry kiln operation duties, cutting kiln samples and wafers, weighing & calculating moisture content.
  • Assist with machine and yard maintenance as needed.
  • Report supply needs in advance to upper management in advance prior to running out.
  • Coordinate with warehouse supervisor to ensure that outbound loads are built and labeled correctly and plan the processing of lumber in an efficient and organized fashion.
  • Assist Dry Kiln Manager with quarterly and yearly inventory.

We are seeking a dependable and skilled Wheel Loader Operator to join our team. In this hands-on role, you’ll operate a wheel loader to safely and efficiently move logs, bark, and other related items. We’re looking for someone with solid equipment experience who takes pride in their work, stays proactive, and upholds high standards of safety and integrity every day.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safely operate wheel loader (front-end loader) to load/unload trucks, stockpiles, or transport materials across the site.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-operation inspections of the equipment, reporting any issues immediately.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area while following all site safety protocols and regulations.
  • Coordinate with log yard manager, truck drivers, and team members to ensure smooth operations and productivity.
  • Conduct basic preventive maintenance and keep the loader in top working condition.
  • Adapt to changing site conditions and priorities while maintaining focus and efficiency.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience operating heavy equipment, with specific wheel loader (front-end loader) operation required.
  • Strong understanding of safe equipment operation practices and site hazards.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks as needed.
  • Reliable transportation to the job site.

HARDWOOD LUMBER GRADER TRAINEE

Ready to build a long-term career, not just find another job? Church & Church Lumber Company is a growing hardwood manufacturer with a long, respected history in the industry. We are searching for a motivated individual who wants to learn a skilled trade and grow with our team.  

NO PRIOR LUMBER EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED; this full-time role offers paid, hands-on training and a clear path into higher‑paying positions in the mill that require advanced skills and responsibility.

ROLE & GROWTH PATH

  • Learn to visually inspect and grade hardwood lumber according to NHLA and company standards while working on a fast-paced grading line.
  • Use strong math skills to measure boards accurately, calculate clear cutting yields, and visualize the best cuttings within each board to maximize value
  • Progress from entry-level trainee to advanced grading, quality roles, and potentially supervisory or other specialized mill positions as skills and performance grow.
